The Man Behind the Hammock
I’ve written this blog post in response to the many questions I receive about my company’s distinct name and unique Beyond Your Hammockprocess. Here you will learn what I do, and more importantly, why I do it. I hope you enjoy the never before told story of Beyond Your Hammock.
Why “Beyond Your Hammock?”
My name is Eric Roberge and I am the founder of Beyond Your Hammock. I help motivated professionals discover and connect with a life they love, using money as a tool to support them along the way.
When I was coming up with the name for my business, I wouldn’t settle for the same old “XYZ Financial” because that doesn’t fit who I am and what I represent. I’m not looking to be your typical financial planning firm that helps you invest your money for the future, leaving clients wondering if their planner truly gets who they are and what they want to do with their life.
So, I threw the cookie cutter name out the window, and with it, the boring, stuffy, awkward process we’ve all come to know as financial planning. I wanted to create something that signified freedom from societal norms; a business that acknowledged that life has changed and is no longer linear.
These days, people want more for themselves, and they want it now. Hanging out in a hammock during “retirement” no longer symbolizes success… it is what’s Beyond Your Hammock that intrigues us. The question often posed is, “How can I create a life that I can enjoy today, while also keeping an eye on the future?”
I grew up torn between following what society says I should do and doing what I know to do.
Ask anyone in my family and they will tell you I was a thinker and a dreamer, and I certainly marched to the beat of my own drum. I remember thinking, “If everyone else is doing it, then I don’t want to do it.” Some might call that being stubborn… but I just call it… well, I guess I call it being stubborn too.
I graduated from Babson College, a school known for its innovative entrepreneurial programs, and spent the next 6 years working for large corporate banks, often wondering why I was there. I finally realized I wasn’t happy. I had so much creativity inside, but I was unable to use it. And, that just didn’t work for me. So, I left my wonderful salary in 2007… one that had doubled in the last 2 years… to become a financial planner with no salary at all. And it’s worth mentioning that this was just before the bomb was dropped on the financial services industry, throwing us into the worst recessionary economy since the great depression.
For the next few years I thought that I had made the worst decision of my life. I had to move back home with my parents and give up a lot of what I enjoyed doing because I could no longer afford it. I found myself in the middle of a quarter life crisis.
The next few years were a struggle. Not only was I scrambling to build a new career, but also to find out who I was and why I was here. At times I felt like I was in the ocean being hit by waves and pulled out to sea by the undertow; I had no solid ground on which to stand. I felt like I had no control.
I learned a lot about who I am and also who I never want to be during these years.
I now know that I’m passionate about inspiring people and making a real and lasting difference in the lives of everyone around me. I realize that each person’s story is different than anyone else’s story, and that means that no one should be forced to follow a one size fits all approach to his or her financial future. I also realize that people may not know exactly what they want for their future. And, if that is the case, I want them to know that I get it. I’ve been in their shoes, and I know what they are going through.
Beyond Your Hammock’s unique process helps professionals “dare to D.R.E.A.M.”
D.R.E.A.M is an acronym for a process that helps professionals:

– Recognize the obstacles in their way.
– Evaluate their current financial circumstances.
– Architect a financial road map for their future.
I am a personal trainer for my clients’ finances, acting as their wealth coach, investment guide and accountability partner. Through this unique process, I help my clients focus on what really matters to them and their families. We have deeper conversations about what it is that they want for themselves and their life, and together, we build a financial plan to help them get there.
Maybe they want to create a more flexible career, start their own business, connect with their passion, or give back to the world. Whatever it is that they want, I’m committed to helping them find it… because that’s where their satisfaction lies… that’s the place “Beyond Your Hammock.”
