I went to a 3 day seminar over the weekend and was fascinated by one of the topics we covered… the ability to “be present” in life. Sounds simple enough, right?
Let’s think about this for a minute. When was the last time you remember enjoying the present moment? We tend to get so caught up in the past… thoughts of something that happened 10 minutes ago, 10 days ago or maybe even 10 years ago… that we don’t fully experience this very moment.
Every thought that runs through our head is based on something that we have experienced in the past. Don’t believe me? I challenge you to have a new thought right now, a thought that you have never had before. I bet you can’t do it. And if you can, I’d love to hear back from you telling me what that thought was, as I’m sure it’s something extraordinary.
As your financial guide, it is our job to help you plan for the future, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t also remind you to enjoy today, for it is only the present moment over which we have control.
Summer is filled with opportunities to enjoy family, friends, places and life in general. Let’s take advantage of today while we still can. Take the time to focus on the present moment and capture it in your memory. Before we know it autumn will be here and all that we will hold onto from the summer is those memories of the past… the ones that will continue to flow through our head as we race through life.
We can’t always control our thoughts, but we do have the ability to choose how we experience life. So be present, make those experiences memorable, and have a blast!
I want to leave you with a quote from Don Williams, Jr. (American Novelist and Poet), “The road of life twists and turns and no two directions are ever the same. Yet our lessons come from the journey, not the destination.”
I invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy the journey.
